This is one of those rare, precious Bollywood films when the writer shines through. With this film, the much dependable Jaideep Sahni asks an immensely relevant question – is marriage an outdated institution? …and Maneesh Sharma gives it his characteristic earthy, rooted to the ground, delightful treatment.

'Shuddh Desi Romance'

Set in Jaipur, the film is about commitment-phobic Raghu Ram (Sushant Singh Rajput) a guide, salesman and part of Tauji’s (Rishi Kapoor) fake baaaraat for weddings. Raghu is easy to fall in love but confused as hell about the responsibilities that go with it. As chance would have it, on his way to his own wedding which he is not too sure of, he meets a hired ‘sister’ Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra) and decides to promptly fall in love with her. Complications arise soon after and Raghu finds himself caught between his would-have-been bride Tara (Vaani Kapoor) and Gayatri. Gayatri has serious trust issues as she has had some bad experiences in the past.
The best thing about this film is that ‘love’ between a man and woman is not taken too seriously as Bollywood is generally guilty of doing. When Raghu tries wooing Gayatri and when finally lands up in her house and between the sheets with her, it seems the most natural thing to happen, without the usual shenanigans that are attached to such every day happenings. From the moment the film opens to the interval (bathroom break, the filmmaker preferred calling it, you will know why when you watch it), the romance and the sizzling chemistry between Sushant and Parineeti keeps you hooked, and keeps you smiling and pining for more.

While Sushant is a natural, it is Parineeti who steals hearts from the first moment she is spotted on the screen. This immensely talented actress is so comfortable in the role that seems tailor-made for her. While Vaani makes a decent debut, Rishi Kapoor as the portly Tauji, who advocates marriage to keep his business going, stands out with a brilliant performance.
However, everything is not hunky-dory with what seems like a perfectly smooth relationship between Raghu and Gayatri and this film. After the interval, the film dips quite a bit as Raghu starts romancing Tara, with Gayatri out of the scene. At one point Raghu’s character seems so shallow and confused that you are not sure what really is the point of this film. Is it about a man who loves his woman but is not ready for commitment or is it about a cad who doesn’t mind entertaining any woman who is hot enough and ready to fall for him.
But overall, a fun-ride. Watch it for Parineeti and Jaideep Sahni. This kind of acting and writing need to be encouraged. And yes, thank you Sahni. Only someone of your calibre could present the leading lady as someone who smokes, drinks, has a past, in short is normal, without being under pressure to offer any kind of justification.

REVIEW

To what the starcast has to say about the movie, actor Sushant Rajput explained, “The emotions here are well played. Each person who falls in love has these emotions but these things have never been spoken and discussed in such an honest manner.”

He described the movie as an extreme different love story which has depicted the minute details of a relationship.

Referring to the recent studies, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) has become an increasing psychiatric problem, especially amongst youth. Shuddh Desi Romance is basically the Indian interpretation of Julia Roberts’s Runaway Bride. The stories are different but the central idea is the same: what happens when someone loves falling in love but panics at the idea of getting married?

Sushant playing the character of Raghuram Sitaram who is a tour guide in Jaipur bounces from girlfriend to mandap to toilet to girlfriend to mandap to toilet with the all the dedication of a ‘yo-yo’ guy. Within the initial minutes of the film, a pattern is recognized: Raghuram will look puzzled, spot an attractive girl, joggle his eyebrows, smooch the girl, dash towards marriage and then head to the toilet, which is the escape route out of the wedding party.

To create a model out of continuous incidents is an archetypal device in romantic comedies, but it only works when there are slight dissimilarities in detail with each replication. These details inform us a bit more about the characters and add up to a climax.

Unfortunately, the movie looks more like a loop than a model, playing ‘Round and round the mulberry bush’ (or the toilet, in this case) with Rajput are Parineeti Chopra as Gayatri and Vaani Kapoor as Tara. Gayatri is rebellious in nature without a cause as she smokes and has had boyfriends in the past whereas Kapoor’s presence is acknowledged because Shuddh Desi Romance needed to kill the three-quarters of the second half that precede the climax.

The chemistry between the stars to be noticed is a big question. The much hyped 27 kisses of the movie developed intense expectations over the chemistry of the stars. But as sad truth, the kisses in this film barely create any spark.

The ladies and gent go for the liplock with the regularity of a news bulletin and the kisses are about as exciting. It certainly does not leave an impression where people are unable to keep their hands off each other. The kisses were obvious as the directorial instructions without delivering tingly feeling.

Sushant Rajput has lacked the confidence of the tortured Ishaan of Kai Po Che which suggested the versatility of the actor. Unluckily, his ability to ooze sex appeal, especially when romancing a co-star, is limited whereas both Chopra and Kapoor are in their facet while they are depicting the independent single woman.

Rishi Kapoor is, as usual, great fun to watch as a mystified marriage decorator who is also a father figure to Raghu.
